VANITAS VANITATUM Published by Coriander Studio 2010
Vanitas Vanitatum (vanity of vanities) is a sophisticated take on the predominately Dutch, eighteenth century momento mori Still life paintings. These paintings, commissioned by rich patrons, were usually painted as a reflection of wealth, power and position. The inclusion of the skull and the hourglass were there to remind the owner or the viewer of the transient nature of life, the futility of pleasure and the certainty of death. The print combines with the forty-nine skulls, a layer of adjectival text that comments upon the transient nature of our consumer, celebrity obsessed society and the vanity within us all. Clare Clinton 2010 Vaintas Vanitatum is a signed limited edition digital print finished with a silk-screen printed satin protection varnish. Vanitas Vanitatum is a first generation original print, which only exists in this form. |
