N.O.T.D. Not Our Type Darling Published by Faine Contemporary Art in 2011
The acronym N.O.T.D was popular during the forties and early fifties especially amongst the 'In Crowd' of the period. The underlying text is an A to Z of the more exclusive London Clubs, e.g. The Athenaeum, Boodles, The Chelsea Arts Club etc, plus a few literary mavericks such as Drones and the Imperial. The basic concept centres on the 15 pool balls (originally stripes or spots) that are needed to play the game, and especially the no 8 Black ball – the coloured ball so beloved by some club committee members for the power it can bestow on them to prevent those they regard as undesirable from joining the club. As well as the playing balls the image contains 15 extra balls bearing apparently significant if irrelevant numbers, that further gently ridicule the snobbish selection process e.g. the number 42 that refers to life the universe and everything, the 99 of the famous ice cream cone fame, and the 39 steps to the book by John Buchan or the film by Alfred Hitchcock. N.O.T.D is a signed limited edition comprising 50 digital prints, each finished with a silk-screen printed satin protection varnish and an Ultra Violet glaze on the balls. The image was generated on computer using Adobe Illustrator and proofed and editioned on an Epson 9900 using Epson archival inks on Somerset Satin 335gsm Enhanced paper. N.O.T.D is a first generation original print, which only exists in this form. |
