Monsters of the Universe Published by Faine Contemporary Art in 201212
This is the second print motivated by bankers and the banking crisis. The first The Red and the Black, was more general in that it referred to banking on a global scale. This one is more specifically aimed at the personal greed of individual bankers and their cavalier attitude towards other people’s money. The primary forms for this print are World Series poker chips with a diamond dusted Dealer disk at the centre. The implication being that bankers treated trading as if they were in a casino. The title refers to the American bankers’ self proclaimed epithet ‘Masters of the Universe’. As Al Pacino at the end of the movie The Devils Advocate says "Vanity was always my favourite". The background text is an alphabet of alliterated phrases that seemed to reflect the bankers actions and attitudes and the proclivities of those who conspired to enable them to make excessive profits irrespective of their social costs – bloated bonuses, legalised larceny, weasel watchdogs etc. Monsters of the Universe is a signed limited edition comprising 50 digital prints finished with a silk-screen printed satin protection varnish, an Ultra Violet glaze on the chips and a diamond dusted dealer disk. The image was generated on computer using Adobe Illustrator and proofed and editioned on an Epson 9900 using Epson archival inks on Somerset Satin 335gsm Enhanced paper. Monsters is a first generation original print, which only exists in this form. |
