Dead Painters Society Published by Faine Contemporary Art Sept 2024. 10 0digital mono-prints on archival 310 gsm paper.
The movie 'Dead Poets Society' provided me with a point of departure and suitable title for this edition. I wanted to use a new, different grid system for this mono-print, as I thought the artist's names would probably prove to be quite long, particularly as I intended to use an Illuminati style typeface. My next door neighbour was having an extension built. I was so impressed by the skill of his bricklayer, that I thought it might be interesting to use a wall as the basis of the structure for this print. I used the proportions of the common house brick as the formal devise for selecting elements from famous twelfth to twentieth centuary paintings, to create the image of a wall, implying bricks and mortor. The comosition is comprised of four alphabets of painters names. The text of each individual name is printed on the section from one of their more recognisable pictures. The title is diamond dusted over elements from paintings of three colour field artists', Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Mark Rothco. The additional four bottom row images are works by artists often regarded as the finest of the Renaissance painters. It is perhaps an irony that that the title of this print shoul refer to the 'society' of deceased painters, as we will all, sooner or later, be invited to join the club. |
