Brave New Worlds no 2 Published by Faine Contemporary Art Sept 2024 5 digital mono-prints on archival 310 gsm paper.
It seems to me that artists have throughout history, enriched the way we perceive the contemporary landscape and influenced the ways in which we might view the natural world. In this print 'Brave New Worlds' I have selected sections from popular landscape paintings to represent schematically the eight planets of our local solar system. The artists are Georgia O'Keeffe (Mercury), Vincent Van Gogh (Venus), Claude Monet (Earth), Andre Derain (Mars) Paul Cezanne (Jupiter), Edvard Munch (Saturn), Jan Toorop (Uranus) and Casper David Friedrich (Neptune), all circling Van Gogh's painting of the Sun. I have juxtaposed these images with a selection of similar period landscapes to represent some of the 286 moons and Dwarf Planets that constitute with the asteroids, the bulk of this system. The background image is from a NASA photograph of the solar system. Each edition print is produced digitally in a different colour way on an archive quality 310 gsm Somerset Satin paper. The text refers to an A-to-Z selection of moons and dwarf planets; interestingly Mercury and Venus havie no natural moons. The print is finished with a glossy protection glaze and signed in pencil on the bottom right hand corner just below the image. It is numbered as mono-print nos 1 to 16 in pencil, just below the image on the left hand side. |
