VANITAS VANITATUM 2 Published by Faine Contemporary Art 2014 (Second version)
Vanitas Vanitatum (vanity of vanities) is a sophisticated take on the predominately Dutch, eighteenth century momento mori Still life paintings. These paintings, commissioned by rich patrons, were usually painted as a reflection of wealth, power and position. The inclusion of the skull and the hourglass were there to remind the owner or the viewer of the transient nature of life, the futility of pleasure and the certainty of death. The print combines with the forty-nine skulls, a layer of adjectival text that comments upon the transient nature of our consumer, celebrity obsessed society and the vanities within us all. Clare Clinton 2010 Vaintas Vanitatum is a signed limited edition digital print on canvass finished with a painted satin protection varnish and a painted hi-gloss varnishh on each od the skulls. |
