"Nothing is illegal if one hundred business men agree to it, this is true any ware in the world". Andrew Young, US Ambassador to the United Nations. It is an unfortunate fact of life that if something can be provided or produced more cheaply anywhere in the world, it will be done without any concern for the quality of the service provided, respect for the primacy of the product or scruples about the social consequences. We are all a combination of positive and negative personality traits. However, relatively few of us experience as much exposure to the media as the captains of our large organisations, such as the multi-nationals, the utility companies, the banking sector, or the social services. An excess of some of the more negative aspects of these qualities seem to be concomitant with the role of their executives, possiblely they are a pre-requisite to ensuring the success of their endeavours. The childish behavoir of some of these directors to snatch up all the toys and stash them in their prams, seems to pervade the corporate conciousness. I often ponder as to why these otherwise intellegent leaders are prepared to ignore the constitutional rights of countries, the civil liberties of populations and the implications for social cohesion - surely it must be more than a desire to 'just grab the money'. It was interesting to reflect on the knee-jerk response by the bosses of the UK utility companies, ("the lights will go out") when it was suggested by the public accounts committee that their profiteering might have to be limited. There was no attempt to hide the venom in their reaction to those who dared to question their dubious practices, or the obvious contempt they felt for the MP's who interrogated them; indeed, it seemed as if they beleived they ran the country and our elected leaders should mind theitr own business. It is usually the case that when the light of publicity shines on these shadowy figures, their automatic resonses could be summed up by the adjectives contained in this print.
