Comic Cuts Published by Faine Contemporary Art 2017
In 1951 I was bought Comic Cuts, a comic strip magazine for children that promoted ideas disapproved of by many parents of that time. I later progressed to the Beano and Dandy's anti education propaganda as portraid by The Bash Steet Kinds, Denis the Menace, Roger The Dodger and Mini the Minx etc. The negative attitudes these comics promoted helped to develop a healthy cynicism towards my elders and betters and a sence of ridicule for phrases like "Play up school - and Play the game" often uttered by vicious PE teachers. This cynicism led later to an appreciation of the multi faceted film comedy genre. Character foibles provided writers and directors with a plethora of material about lack of self awareness, hubris and egocentricity by the protagonists in these movies and the behavior both on and off the silver screen by thier stars. I have used jigsaw shaped secctions of stills from some of the most popular humerous movies as a metphore for the puzzles portrayed by the players featured in these films and juxtaposed them with an alphabet of concentric circles of some of the most famous titles. |
