"...and what do you do? Published by Faine Contemporary Art 2022 Revised work printed on Canvas.
In 2004 Peter Blake proposeded I might introduce an alphabet text into what had hitherto been conceptual, essentially abstract paintings and drawings. I had for many years felt I wanted to deal with the sort of ideas encountered in Joseph Heller's Catch 22. Peter's suggestion providied me with an important element lacking in my work, namely a linguistic content. I now attempt to create images that, at first sight appear attractuve or even pretty, but on closer inspection contain alliterative texts that contradict, question or are critical of the formal, visual content. "and what do you do?" Is the ubiquitous question that crops at social occasions when conversation starts to lapse. The alliterative text refers to past experiences of the responses to this inquiry from acquaintances such as arrogant architects, smug solicitors, whining waiters etc. The abstract worms could be construed as a metaphore for those who would prefer not to admit to what they really do e.g. burglar, loan shark, mugger or hedge fund manager. |
