Mere Daubers Published by CCA Galleries in 2011
'Mere Daubers' is a quote from Baudelaire referring to his opinion on the work of Claude Monet. While a staunch advocate of Manet and Constantine Guys, Baudelaire was dismissive of Monet. This is the starting point for Faine’s composition that continues the grid theme of recent works and explores the flexible concept of what is acceptable to the art community, and how one day’s 'outsider art' will be considered ‘art of the establishment’ the next. One cannot but wonder what Baudelaire’s attitude might be towards other modern masters contained within the print. At the base of the composition is a chequerboard containing reproductions of late nineteenth/early twentieth century avant-garde artworks. As with Art Malarkey, Classic Malarkey and Homage in Hearts we are invited to test our art historical knowledge and name the artists/artworks represented. The second layer of the composition is a grid of consecutive letters that can be broken down into the names of the artists concerned. Clare Clinton 2011 'Mere Daubers' is a signed limited edition comprising 50 digital prints each finished with a silk-screen printed satin protection varnish, and an Ultra Violet glaze on the smaller squares. Mere Daubers is a first generation original print, which only exists in this form. |
