The authors of the phrase 'The First Casualty of War is Truth' range from Aeschylus to Dr Johnson and Hiram W Johnson to Winston Churchill. However the sentiment expressed in the statement could also be applied to politics, the banks, and the institutions of state such as the church, the law, and dare I say it medicine. This print, which is my take on the Iraq war, juxtaposes the white crosses evocative of war grave cemeteries, with diagonal crosses (reminiscent of the painting by Caravaggio of the Crucifixion of St Paul) that are stained with oil. The form of the print implies a colourful, jolly abstract image, contradicted by the title and the alliterative A to Z text. The text refers to those individuals who are prepared to distort truth to further their careers, irrespective of the effect this may have, e.g. Acquiescent Academics, Lying Leaders or Weasel Watchdogs 'First Casualty' is a signed limited edition comprising 50 digital prints each finished with a silk-screen printed satin protection varnish, and an Ultra Violet glaze on the crosses. It is a first generation original print, which only exists in this form. |
